My foray into the medical world began when I read medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. After medical school and internship, I completed basic general surgical training and obtained the intercollegiate Membership of The Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS) in Edinburgh. As fate would have it, synchronous events led to a visit to the Ivo Pitanguy’s plastic surgery department in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, which at that time was one of the top plastic surgery units in the world. I completed my residency at the 38th Infirmary Department of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at the Santa Casa Misericordia General Hospital in Rio de Janeiro directly under the renowned Professor Ivo Pitanguy (view page), considered one of the founding fathers of plastic surgery from 2012 to 2016.
After residency, I completed accredited international clinical fellowships in Craniofacial Surgery and Reconstructive Microsurgery spanning 2 years in Asia and Europe.
To me there is no distinction between purely reconstructive or purely aesthetic surgery. This was the ethos of Prof Ivo Pitanguy where even poor patients had a right to beauty as we routinely performed aesthetic surgery for the underprivileged for low cost and for many cases for free. Hence alongside all the reconstructive work that we perform including burns, cleft deformities, hand surgery and trauma; aesthetic surgery was given equal importance in our service in Brazil. I continue to adhere to this philosophy in my surgical practice.
Since returning to Malaysia, I have developed a special interest in the early detection of skin cancers and skin lesions requiring surgical treatment. As a Brazilian trained plastic surgeon, I have had extensive experience in evaluating photodamaged skin and skin lesion surgeries for moles, cysts, warts, skin malignancies etc. I use a dermoscope to examine all skin lesions in addition to gross clinical examination. I completed a Diploma in Dermatology from Wales, UK and have been treating various skin diseases (view page) such as eczema, psoriasis, urticaria, vitiligo, hair loss and more.
My aim of setting up Skin Check Malaysia is to provide a wholistic service in management of skin cancers or lesions from early detection, correct diagnosis and definitive reconstruction post ablation of the lesion. My extensive background in plastic and reconstructive surgery allows me to excise the lesions with safe margins with confidence that I can provide robust reconstruction to restore form and function in one setting.
In addition, I offer the entire spectrum of aesthetic surgery including facial, body and breast procedures. Please click the link PROCEDURES to learn more about our services.
I am also a credentialed Cleft Surgeon under Mission Smile (formerly known as Operation Smile India) and enjoy performing cleft lip and palate surgeries in underprivileged children on humanitarian missions worldwide. I frequently travel abroad to lecture on topics pertaining to plastic and reconstructive surgery.
